Rowing and Sailing are at the very core of Dartmouth Regatta week, incorporating the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. It is all about the river and the sea. The competition is fierce and the fun is full on against the magnificent, scenic backdrop that is the South Hams.

179 YEARS OF REGATTA

The Port is steeped in history, as is the event: it is one of the oldest in the country and the earliest recorded Regatta was in 1822 with 2024 seeing the 179th Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta take place.

4 Facts You Need To Know

Fact 1

Dartmouth Regatta is a whole week of entertainment and is free to attend. It costs over £180,000 each year to stage and we rely entirely on sponsors, traders and public donations.

Fact 2

There are over 250 sailing yachts entered for the racing in Start Bay. There are over 300 races and events during Regatta week including 50 rowing heats and races with around 600 competitors.

Fact 3

It’s not just sailing! The Regatta Tennis Tournament use 864 tennis balls during the week long tournament. The Regatta road races take place over a gruelling and very hilly 5.1 mile course.

Fact 4

The Regatta committee is entirely made up of volunteers who dedicate their time for free. We have to have at least 6 volunteers just to keep the Crabbing competition in order!

#MYREGATTA

Regatta always starts long before the last Friday in August. Vaughan Bowden is Vice Chair of DARC and runs a safety boat for skiff rowing on Thursday. Months of planning go into this event to ensure 300 plus rowers enjoy a good race. Vaughan shares how everyone prepares for the biggest week of the year and how generations of his family have been involved.
