May is here, and we aren’t sure about you, but we don’t ever recall having to have the heating on in this month! It’s been so chilly!
Planning continues at pace for Regatta 176. With the week starting on the 21 August with our Regatta Family Funday, Dog Show, Swimming Gala, Kon-Tiki raft race and Silent Disco, it will certainly be a fully packed Saturday. Keep your eyes peeled for a surf simulator – all new for 2021! Of course the sailing and rowing will take centre stage, which is as it should be as water based activities are exactly what a regatta is all about.
Many favourites are returning; Spot the Oddity, Flyboarding, Newfoundlands and our Regatta Shopping Parade to name just a few. The committee are working with the local businesses who have space on the South Embankment to ensure we all enjoy a merry week together. We certainly won’t be asking anyone to move during the week. We want to continue working together, as we have been in 2019, and absolutely do not want to impact on anyone’s ability to earn a living after such a shocking year.
Coronation Park will have not 2 but 3 open-air events during the week. Sundowner is back with crowd-pleasing I Love Amp playing amongst many others, Proms in the Park will have a movie theme, and all new for Thursday evening will be a family-friendly ‘School Disco’ with amazing ABBA tribute band ‘Take a Chance on Us”. Everyone knows the ABBA songs and we fully expect the park to be full of smiling faces singing along! Fancy dress very much encouraged… Plus the Coro Park team are planning a Heros’ Day on Regatta Saturday, which will feature some of our Armed Forces and our Emergency Services demonstrating just how brilliant they all are.
This year we will be aiming to credited with a Clean Regatta Platinum Award from Sailors for the Sea. Clean Regattas is the world’s leading sustainability certification for all on-the-water, near-the-water, and water-loving events. Since the program’s inception in 2006, over 2,600 events have shown their commitments to sustainability by hosting Clean Regattas. This program has reached over 715,000 sailors and attendees in over 40 countries. We have put in place many initiatives to try and become a leading sustainable event.
We will, as ever, be entirely driven on safety by the UK Governments guidelines in place at the time and you can be assured we are totally prepared to ensure your safety, which may mean we expect you to cooperate with these guidelines, which of course you all will!
We can’t wait to welcome you all in August, and until then, stay safe and well.
