Rowing was a very popular sport in the second half of the 19th Century – with much more spectator interest than today with professional oarsmen racing for very large sums of money becoming the heroes of the day. In the West of England rowing was also a popular sport and many of the clubs now affiliated to the West or England A.R.A.had been formed long before the association itself.
